Using Legos to teach language

If you have tried speech and language therapy before, you may have tried to teach your child to articulate certain sounds or to understand words you know it can be tricky to keep them engaged and motivated.
Lego’s or building blocks are a great way to support language. Here are 3 creative ways to teach language using Lego’s or blocks.

Building sentences

Write words on the blocks and have your learner create sentences after showing them a picture. You can also create nonsense sentences or use alien words to help support their understanding of sentence structure and semantics.

Positional and descriptive language

have your child retrieve blocks you have described by colour, shape or position (e.g the red small block behind the green block). be sure to keep it simple start with and make sure you use prompt strategies to support learning.

Articulation

Start with writing the sounds onto the Lego and prompting your learner to sound out whilst building the structure. This is also a great way to work on blending and incorporating sounds into words.

Teaching language to children with speech difficulties should be fun. So try these 3 ideas with Lego’s or blocks in your sessions today.
